About Me

My photo
Welcome to my corner of the internet! I’m a software engineer by day, mechanical engineer by degree, some-time traveler, music lover, and self-proclaimed motivational speaker by... well, any spare minute I can find. When I’m not busy debugging code, you can find me lost in a new place, jamming to a mix of Indian and Western music (yes, I’m the one who creates playlists that make no sense), or pondering the mysteries of the universe, from physics to geopolitics. Oh, and if you need some motivation or a good laugh, I’m your go-to person—I'm basically a walking TED talk. Stick around for random musings, technical rants, and possibly some okayish poetry ✍️!

Tricks and Tips for Job Search

Job search could be challenging at times. The uncertainty is always there no matter how skilled or experienced you are. I have listed some points that I feel would help the task a little easier.

Resume/CV

  • Keep a pdf format of your resume handy on your smartphone. Save contact numbers of experienced alumni.
  • DOC format is not recommended, you can use PDF or DOCX.
  • A visual resume is good to have, although not necessary but gives an edge over the crowd if the company gives an option to submit a visual resume.
  • Add some of your work on Github and add the link to your resume. (if IT/Software)
  • Spell check the resume.

Skills

  • Usually, candidates have the question of what to learn and where to learn.
  • Phone a senior working in the relevant field and take suggestions.
  • Search the technology or area of work in Naukri.com and filter with expected salary, you will get a list of jobs, let's say 50 jobs. Note down common skills mentioned in the job description for all these jobs. This is what you have to prepare.
  • Doing the above step will help you know what skills are in future scope and what skills will fetch you more salary in the corporate world.
  • Do at least 2-3 certifications on primary skills that you mention in the resume.
  • Perform some sample projects (available in courses or on youtube) and upload them to Github.

Pursuing Other Passion

  • Apply for part-time/contract-based jobs, the salary would be lesser in the former but this will give you enough time for preparation to achieve your goals. Be cautious as many contract-based jobs do not have the facility to provide salary slips. The salary slips are important and actual proof of your previous employment when you try to switch to a new company under full-time payroll.

International Jobs

  • Companies looking for international candidates have a transparent and clear job description.
  • Skills in demand may differ. For eg: CATIA/PRO-E may have demand in India but Globally bigger companies look for SOLIDWORKS (Mechanical); Similarly Sauce labs for security testing in India could be AWS or Azure globally. So you have to be multi-skilled if looking for international jobs.

Maintain Excel Sheet

  • Note down all the companies you are applying, to and a list of calls received from HRs or recruiters. Learnings from the previous interviews.

Community

  • Join alumni groups
  • Be in contact with Training and Placement team.
  • Join trusted job groups on Whatsapp , Telegram
  • Be active on LinkedIn, add all your skills and ask for endorsement and recommendation.
